3 questions for Kateřina Višinská, the coordinator of the Czech Dance Platform Festival

What is, in your opinion, the mission of the Czech Dance Platform Festival?
The platform gives the general public an opportunity to see within a short period of time the best of last year´s new productions in the realm of contemporary dance. The festival will involve a spectator in the intensive whirl of dance, in which the artists, professionals, but also the spectators will meet in an open atmosphere, this year´s subtitle is: Come and Get Swept Away with us!

The international jury of the Czech Dance Platform has announced the nominees for the SAZKA Prize for „discovery in dance“

The 15th edition of the Czech Dance Platform, the festival of contemporary dance, saw its final part on the International Day of Dance. “After having counted all the vote tickets, we can now announce the winner of the Czech Dance Platform Spectators´ Prize. As the differences between the numbers of votes were extremely narrow this year, the two second best performances, Adéla Laštovková-Stodolová´s La Petite Mort and Nigel Charnock´s Love Me were also very close to the victory. However, the Spectators´s Prize goes to Karel Vaněk for his piece Orphans,” reveals the president of Tanec Praha civic association, Yvona Kreuzmannová. For the piece which he had dedicated to his recently deceased partner in life and dance he will receive half of the revenues from tickets sold during the Platform at Ponec theatre. The Prize will be awarded, together with the SAZKA Prize for “discovery in dance” and the interpretation “Dancer of the Year” Prize, at the gala closing of the festival TANEC PRAHA 2009. Bearing the title “Czech Dance with World Choreographers”, the gala ceremony will be held on June 26th at O2 Arena.

Czech Dance Platform: ten performances worth seeing!

The Platform will open with Tribute to Černá&Vaněk Dance: Orphans, a performance created by a choreographic duo that had for years been installed in Germany. The premiere of the piece had to be cancelled due to Eva Černá´s serious disease and her consequent death last year. Karel Vaňek remade the original duet into a solo which he dedicated to his dance and life partner. The second evening will offer the spectators the opportunity to consider a new piece created by the 2007 SAZKA Prize for “discovery in dance” awardee, Ioana Mona Popovici: the piece in the creation of which she has invested the awarded sum, 400.000 CZK, bears the title Luna Plina / Full Moon.

Sunday April 26th will open the competition part of the festival. The competing pieces are: 100 Wounded Tears, a new performance of the group DOT 504 and the choreographers Jozef Fruček and Linda Kapetanea, both of them well established on international scene; the Czech creative generation is represented by Kateřina Stupecká and her piece Da Capo, Lenka Bartůňková and Dora Hoštová with their performance To the World Two, Tereza Ondrová with Jaja and Papus and Adéla Laštovková with La Petite Mort. Jiří Bartovanec is coming from Berlin to compete with his performance When my mind is rocking, I know it‘s 7, a piece created in-cooperation with the ensemble Sasha Waltz & Guests within the project “Choreographers of the Future“. Thomas Steyaert will present his piece Hidden Landscape to the creation of which he was invited by the group DOT 504.

To offer the spectators as complete an account as possible of what has happened in the field of contemporary dance during last season, the organizers have complemented the programme with non-competing pieces. A fifty minute fight between a man and a woman on stage - that’s a piece called Sudden Showers of Silence (Jozef Fruček and Linda Kapetanea). The choreography is inspired by the last meeting of Hector and his wife Andromache, a story from Homer’s Iliad. The spectators will also have the chance to get acquainted with the creation of Ohad Naharin, a choreographer who comes from Israel, a promised land of dance, and who is considered one of the best in his domain internationally. The Platform will present his piece B/olero, performed by the group 420PEOPLE.

The last day of the Platform falls, symbolically, on the International Day of Dance. Ponec theatre dedicates this day to all who are interested in learning some more about contemporary dance. From 11 am the Czech and foreign members of the SAZKA Prize jury (dance experts, directors of foreign theatres and festivals) will participate in a discussion on the theme of “Czech dance within European context”. And finally, to please all the hearts burning with love for dance, 1 pm will see a free screening of a film by a legendary DV8 Physical Theatre, The Cost of Living.

ADVANCED TICKET SALE takes place to April 24th at Ponec theatre which is the only location where tickets for all 10 performances can be purchased. A 30 CZK reduction applies to tickets bought in the advanced ticket sale, the 30 crowns are deducted from the standard prizes – 190 / 120 CZK (students and retired), 290 / 150 CZK (tickets to Archa theatre). Tickets for Ponec theatre performances are sold also at Celetná theatre and in Ticketpro and Ticketstream networks.
